Motor Neuron Disease Research Group

Our research focuses on genetic, immunological, clinical and epidemiological aspects of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and other motor neuron diseases (e.g., spinal muscular atrophy). We aim to better understand the biological mechanisms underlying the disease with the ultimate goal to unravel molecular pathways that can be targeted by novel therapies. Our group also runs projects in search of novel biomarkers (in the blood or MRI) to identify very early changes that are specific for the disease. The identification of early biomarkers could enable us to apply protective therapies before the onset of substantial disability in affected individuals. Our group collaborates with national and international centres, and is member of ENCALS, the European Network for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
